  • 12/24/06 - Added a photo and description of his New Woodstock NY 1945 module from Phil Lord to the Layouts page

  • 8/1/06 - Update the 52' Mill Gon page with a photo of the original paint scheme.

  • 2/7/06 - A PowerPoint clinic on building the LV SW8 "Pup" has been added to the DB Kit page.

  • 1/1/06 - Information about the Sunshine Models resin kit of the Bethlehem Steel gondola has been added to the 52 ft Mill Gondolas page.

  • 10/10/05 - The second production batch of SW8 dynamic brake kits has been delivered, and the remaining prepaid orders are have been filled.

  • 7/28/05 - The page on modeling the LV's 52 ft Bethlehem Steel mill gondolas has been updated, and Chuck Cover's article on kitbashing one from the Con-Cor HO scale gon has been added.

  • 3/16/05 - Added three Interlocking Diagrams for the Packerton Yard - Lehighton area, linked through the mileposts on the New York Division - Main Line page.  I'll add more as time permits - look for the milepost numbers that are hyperlinks.

  • 1/11/05 - Added a page on Reinhard Platt's LVRR Central Jersey Mainline layout.

  • 10/14/04 - The Tuscan F-units are here, and photos have been posted.

  • 9/2/04 - Second round test shots of the SW8 conversion kit arrived in the mail yesterday.  Things are looking better, but I don't think we are there yet.

  • 8/31/04 - Updated the page on my layout, now named the Bethlehem and Penobscot to give a little better feel for what it covers than just "LV NY Division."

  • 8/25/04 - Added a page to cover the new Lehigh Valley F-units in the late Tuscan Red scheme.  ARHS is partnering with Empire Northern Models to have Stewart produce a limited run of three different F7As and three different F3Bs.

  • 6/21/04 - Added a link to the new ARHS eBay Store, where models of anthracite railroads subjects can be found.

  • 4/29/04 - Updated the Caboose page to cover recent evidence for yellow lettering as a variant of paint scheme #2.

  • 4/9/04 - Pages have been added to cover the Alco Roadswitchers, the Alco Centuries, and the EMD F-units.  These will be filled in as time permits.  Eventually the web site will be reorganized so that prototype and modeling information is kept together wherever possible.

  • 4/1/04 - Met with the SW8 conversion kit manufacturer to discuss revisions to the parts for better detail and dimensional accuracy.  Re-work will begin in about two weeks.  A photo of a mock-up using the trial parts on a P2K SW9 shell has been posted on the SW8 kit page.

  • 3/24/04 - Test shots of the SW8 conversion kit have been received for review.  See details on the SW8 kit page.

  • 12/30/03 - Mike Bednar's new book on the Lehigh Valley Wyoming and Buffalo Divisions is now available, and you can order it from the ARHS for 20% less than the list price.  Go to Sale Items, then Books, print out the order form and mark number B-1267 ($52.00 + $6.00 S&H).

  • 12/15/03 - Work is in progress for the master model for the SW8 dynamic brake kit. I'm told that no problems have come up, but it's not going as fast as predicted.  I'm still hoping that advance orders will be filled during first quarter 2004.

  • 10/13/03 - Met with the people who will manufacture the SW8 dynamic brake kit, and made some major revisions to the design to ensure that the finished model will stand up to the rigors of operation and maintenance. Also added some new parts based on new information about the LV's SW8s.  A revised kit description has been posted, and the timetable has been updated.

  • 9/12/03 - ARHS has received 107 advance orders for the LV SW8 dynamic brake conversion kit, so this project will be proceeding ASAP!

  • 9/11/03 - Added some comments on using the SW8 dynamic brake kit with the Athearn SW7, in response to questions.

  • 9/11/03 - Updated the LV Diesels page to include the latest model releases in HO.

  • 8/1/03 - Added a page for the ARHS Lehigh Valley SW8 dynamic brake conversion kit.  This project is finally ready to roll!

  • 7/7/03 - I have changed my e-mail address to "ed at lvrrmodeler dot net". The old address has been closed out because it was collecting so much spam after being posted on this site. I have also be deleted all other e-mail addresses, treating them the same way, so your address cannot be collected by spammers. If you've had to change your e-mail and would like the new address posted in this safer format, drop me a note.

  • 4/21/03 - Started filling out the page for Stirling Woodin's HO scale East Penn Junction layout as Stirling submits photos and text.

  • 3/21/03 - Changed the former Paint and Decals page to Diesel Color Schemes, and started adding background info and photos illustrating the color schemes. Some of this info will be used by Life-Like to make the colors on their new Proto 1000 RS2 more prototypical.

  • 3/14/03 - Cleaned up the home page by moving What's New and How to Contribute to their own pages.

  • 3/12/03 - Moved the site to a new server, since the one I've been using will be going out of business at the end of April. You are now looking at the NEW SERVER.

  • 3/9/03 - Added a late 1963-1966 freight schedule from Jim Kerner to the Operations page.

  • 3/6/03 - Initial trials running a test TOFC train of one 85' and three 89' flatcars through my hidden Buffalo Division staging loop have been successful! See the Modeling the Apollos and Mercurys page for details.

  • 10/4/02 - Repaired links to George Elwood's and John Campbell's LV web sites, both of which have new URLs. I link to photos on many other web sites, rather than duplicate the fine work done by people like George and John in preserving the memory of the LV and other fallen flags.

  • 8/28/02 - Finally got a decent start on the in-depth industry pages with Whitehall Cement, featuring photos by Tom Biery. More to come on this page, someday to include a modeling section.

  • 8/22/02 - Added two new freight schedules to the Operations page, dated 9/27/53 and 10/28/56, courtesy of Ralph Heiss.

  • 7/19/02 - Updated the Baldwin Switcher page to reflect the announcement of Stewart's S-12. Will add more once I get a good look at the new model.

  • 5/28/02 - Added an index of LV articles appearing in Flags Diamonds and Statues to the LVRR Magazine Articles page.

  • 5/23/02 - Filled in the October 1969 ORER data on number of cars in service, on the Freight Car pages. This will give a better picture of what was still in service, for those modeling the 1970s.

  • 5/13/02 - Changed the Paint Mixes page to Paint & Decals, after a question from a reader got me digging through my pile of decals. Your input will help flesh  this section out!

  • 5/3/02 - Added photos of rebuilt PS-1 boxcars from Guil Mack to the USRE 40 ft rebuilds page.

  • 4/19/02 - Revised the Caboose paint schemes numbering system on the Caboose page, listing only clearly definable schemes and not trying to cover every minor variation.  Added links to on-line caboose photos as well as references to caboose photos in books and magazines. Still need to pin down the dates of the Tuscan and PC Green schemes - can anyone help?

  • 4/2/02 - Added a photo of Curt Pope's HO scale model of LV 137, a VO-1000 in the as-delivered pre-war scheme, to the Baldwin Switcher page.

  • 3/15/02 - Added links to MapQuest on the On-line Industries page and to other on-line map service as well, on the LVRR on the Web page. These maps show the LVRR trackage if you zoom in far enough, and on Mapquest are linked to contemporary aerial photos on which you can often still see the LVRR right of way.

  • 3/13/02 - Updated the spotting differences between the Valley's DS-4-4-1000s and S-12s on the Baldwin Switcher page, thanks to the sharp eyes of Norman Mueller.

  • 2/27/02 - Added a used book search engine to both the LV Books and Other Books pages. Provided by Add-All, this will search the stock of over 20,000 dealers for the books you want, and provide price comparisons. I've used it many times on their site, and find it extremely useful.

  • 2/27/02 - Corrected some info on the Caboose page, thanks to comments from sharp-eyed readers Fritz Kuenzel (current owner of 95026) and Bill Brault.

  • 2/26/02 - Added the long-awaited Fantasy Models page. This is reserved for decorated models sold in LV paint schemes, for which no LV prototype ever existed. Since all other modeling references are linked to info about the prototype and there are no prototypes for these models, I've had no place to publish this material until now!

  • 2/21/02 - Added three more years of roster info to the Freight Cars pages, thanks to Larry Grubb, who went through ORERs for those years and put the data into the format used on those pages.

  • 2/18/02 - Split the Freight Cars page into smaller separate pages for Box Cars, Reefers, Flat Cars, Hoppers, Gondolas, Covered Hoppers and Tank Cars for faster loading on your browser.

  • 2/12/02 - The Chart of on-line customers has been completed for all industries on both main line and branch lines during the period 1969 through 1972. This exhausts the material contributed by Ralph DeBlasi and found in the Pennsylvania State Archives. If you have Traffic Track Diagrams for years before or after 1969-1972, please let me know.

  • 2/11/02 - Added info from 1963 list of non-revenue equipment supplied by Mark Nolan to the Maintenance-of-Way and Work Cars page.

  • 2/10/02 - Added a list of Pullman sleepers used by LV to the Passenger Equipment page, with modeling recommendations from Wayne Knorek. Added a section on Gas-Electric self-propelled cars to the same page. Information on these is spotty - LV had 26 of these cars, but I could find mention of only 23 of them by car number. Any additional info would be appreciated.

  • 2/9/02 - The Modeling Passenger Equipment page has been updated to include my suggestions for a "poor man's Black Diamond," using commonly available plastic kits for a "good enough" representation of the Valley's premier passenger train. Your suggestions are welcome!

  • 2/6/02 - I've updated the new Baldwin switchers page to reflect additional prototype and model information. This page was created in response to questions about Stewart's new DS-4-4-1000 and how it differs from the S-12. Lee Turner's O scale LV 200 has been moved to this page.

  • 2/5/02 - The Caboose page has been updated to show more steel cabooose color schemes, and an effort is underway to classify the color schemes in a way similar to what Carl Steckler did for LV's diesel locomotives.

  • 2/3/02 - The SW8 "Pups" page is almost complete in terms of prototype information. If you can supply a photo of any of the missing locomotives in the chart at the bottom of the page, please drop me a note. There is still plenty of room for your modeling photos and tips, too!

  • 1/16/02 - Added a page for the 52'-6" fishbelly mill gondolas, following my policy of further integrating prototype and modeling information.

  • 1/4/02 - Expanded the Modeling Freight Cars page to a section, with daughter pages on USRE 40 ft rebuilds, (with Phil Buchwald's article on modeling the AAR car) and a separate page on LV's white boxcars.

  • 1/2/02 - HAPPY NEW YEAR! One of my resolutions is to clean up my e-mail "in-box," which is full of great submissions for LVRR Modeler. Here's what's happened so far:

    • Added a page of Passenger Train Consists for those who want to model the correct mix of cars in their passenger trains.

    • Added the Industries page that I've planned for so long, to place photos and information about LV customers so we can model them more accurately (or at least better than by placing a generic building on the siding). LV public timetables often featured photos of customer locations, so if you have some you'd like to share, they will be welcome here!

    • Added a Lineside Structures page, eventually to feature photos & plans of LVRR structures important to the modeler.

    • Added a Modeling Steam Locomotives page, with Richie Scanapio's article on kitbashing Dorothy as the first feature.

    • Added photos and descriptions of models by numerous contributors to both the modeling pages and added to the list of available models on the protoytype pages.

  • 12/26/01 - Finished Jim Dalberg's New Jersey Northern page, including photos, track plan and operating schematic for Jim's LV/CNJ HO layout.

  • 11/17/01 - Updated the Diesel Locomotives page to reflect retrofit of MU capability on some SW8s and SW9s.

  • 11/14/01 - The Caboose page is being extensively reworked to include more development history, phase spotting features, and examples of color schemes. This page is a model of how I would like LVRR Modeler to eventually treat all of the subject covered on this web site. Corrections and additions to the caboose page are welcome! (Several notes from Larry Grubb provided the impetus for this revision.)

  • 10/24/01 - Added carloads of anthracite shipped from LV collieries to the Chart of On-Line Customers, NY Division Branch Lines. (I needed this info for my ARHS convention talk, so I added it here, too!)

  • 10/23/01 - Updated the Diesel Locomotives page with info showing the differences between LVRR SW8 orders, contributed by Larry Grubb of Life-Like.

  • 10/8/01 - I've received lots of new material from readers that will definitely improve the site over the next few months, but I apologize in advance for the time it will take to get all this material onto the site. I'm preparing a talk on "Modeling the LVRR in the 1970s" at the ARHS convention in Scranton on 10/27, so that's taking priority right now.

  • 9/6/01 - Added a Site Map to help you find information.

  • 9/2/01 - The Freight Car page has been updated with complete April 1964 ORER listings of cars in service.

  • 8/31/01 - The Diesel Locomotives page has been rearranged to show locomotives in order of road number, rather than dates of service, and the list of pre-war diesel/electrics and gas/electrics has been updated.

  • 8/30/01 - Photos of Curt Pope's NW1 model in the pre-war paint scheme have been added to the Modeling Diesel Locomotives page.

  • 8/26/01 - Another Jim Six article, this time on modeling GP38AC #313, has been adapted from Mainline Modeler.

  • 8/22/01 - Posted a copy of the LVRR Form C Clearance Card on the Operations Page. This is a full size reproduction of two forms - print it out and cut it in half for use in your model railroad operations. More forms to follow!

  • 8/20/01 - Phil Buchwald has supplied data for the MDC modern 40 ft box car, which is now included in the 40 ft boxcar survey.

  • 8/11/01 - Jim Six's complete article on modeling LV 317 from the Athearn GP38-2 kit has been reprinted on this web site. I hope to be able to bring you more LVRR articles from the model railroad magazines in the future.

  • 8/7/01 - Completed the April 1948 ORER listings, started filling in the April 1964 listings on the Freight Car page.

  • 8/7/01 - Added photos and a description of Ian Metcalfe's Beaver Meadow layout, based on the LVRR ins the Hazelton area during the 1970s.

  • 8/6/01 - Added a Reefers section to the prototype Freight Car page.

  • 8/4/01 - Started a survey of available HO 40 ft boxcar kits suitable for representing the leased/rebuilt PC Green cars on the Modeling Freight Cars page. Feel free to add your opinions!

  • 8/4/01 - All caboose modeling material has been consolidated to a revised Modeling Cabooses page, and a review of the new MDC HO kit has been added to the caboose model survey.

  • 8/1/01 - Chuck Huthmaker has added some photos of the soon-to-be-demolished L&S Division to his layout page.

  • 7/6/01 - Added Maintenance-of-Way and Work Cars page, but not much on it yet.

  • 7/6/01 - References have been added to the Freight Cars page for all articles in the model railroad magazines on LVRR boxcars, gondolas, hoppers and covered hoppers.

  • 6/25/01 - Added a page on Paint Mixes. These arguments get rehashed so often, I thought that those new to modeling the LVRR might find it useful.

  • 5/31/01 - The Chart of on-line customers has been completed for all industries on both main line and branch lines from Milepost 1.0 to the west end of the Wilkes-Barre Sales Territory (Milepost 265.7 - Milan, PA).

  • 5/21/01 - Photos of Mark Nolan's cabooses have been added to the Brass Page.

  • 4/1/01 - Notes on the use of "A" before caboose numbers have been revised on the Caboose page, per info from Mike Bednar.

  • 3/24/01 - A brass models page has been added, initially featuring Joe Zyla's collection. As with the other model pages, all model photos and articles are hyperlinked from the Equipment pages.

  • 3/22/01 - The first photograph of an LVRR customer plant has been added - Tioga Mills, in Waverly, NY. Walter Chamberlain originally suggested the idea of including the photos of customer plants that appeared in many of the public timetables published by the LVRR. They were small photos, with low resolution, so don't expect too much, but they can provide a good guide for modelers as to general plant layout and, in the case of aerial photos, track locations. The photos will be linked to the charts of customer locations and traffic generated. If you have any of these photos that you would like to share, please let me know!

  • 3/22/01 - The first passenger train schedule has been added. I think that the Adobe Acrobat scan is actually easier to read than the original!

  • 3/19/01 - An example of an original Newark Sales Territory Traffic Track Diagram has been added to the Operations page, and some of the Operations section has been revised to make it easier to understand.

  • 3/16/01 - Freight schedules from the 1959 and 1968 Employee Timetables have been added to the Operations page.

  • 3/13/01 - Lehigh Valley Railroad Modeler has a new address and a new, larger, server.

  • 3/12/01 - Jim Hoegg, our first Contributing Editor, has organized and filled in all the prototype information for the Steam Locomotives page. Now we need you to send in the model information!

  • 3/8/01 - The former Modeling section has been renamed the Equipment section, and a new Modeling section has been added, which initially includes Layouts, Diesel Locomotives, and Cabooses. You can still find all equipment modeling info from links on the Equipment page.

  • 3/7/01 - The Modeling pages are being filled in with photos and short notes contributed by LVRR modelers. I'd like to display your best work too! Send contributions to Ed Schaller.

  • 3/6/01 - Freight train schedules for 1955 and 1970 have been added to the Operations page

  • 3/6/01 - New LVRR documents on traffic statistics and customer info have been added to the Operations page

  • 3/1/01 - The Freight Car table is being expanded, back to 1946. People have also contributed data for 1964 and 1969, which will be fit in if it adds something new.

Several people have sent notes asking why the rate at which new material is being posted has slowed down, and if there is a problem. Thanks for your concern, but I'm doing fine! There are several reasons for the slow-down. No one reason is the most important, but they all impact on the situation:

  • Most of the easy stuff has been done, and projects now on the books will take more time to complete. I want to concentrate on the industries served by the LVRR, so any photos, track diagrams, etc. that you can provide would be greatly appreciated.  I'll probably be posting pages "under construction" for a while, rather than adding nothing new at all, but even that will be at a slower rate than before.

  • I'm devoting significant time to my own Lehigh Valley layout, modeling the New York Division in the '70s, from Florence Yard (Bethlehem Steel) to Coxton Yard. I've finally got the hidden Sayre/Buffalo staging yard built and operating, and will soon be starting on the visible trackage from Coxton Yard to Mountaintop.

  • I'm working on drawings for the ARHS Lehigh Valley dynamic brake-equipped SW8 model project. Many of you saw the drawings in progress at the ARHS convention in Easton, and provided valuable feedback. I'm hoping to eventually publish the drawing, with photos to show details, in Flags Diamonds and Statues.
